CHEYENNE, Wyo. -- The city's Finance Committee moved forward Tuesday with a package of road and sidewalk projects worth close to three and a half million dollars. The approvals cover multiple contracts aimed at fixing some of the roughest stretches of pavement and crumbling walkways across town.
Committee members voted to recommend the spending package to the full city council, which will have the final say in the coming weeks. The largest chunk of the money is set aside for asphalt overlay work on several major arterial streets that have deteriorated after repeated freeze-thaw cycles over the past few winters. Another portion will go toward concrete panel replacement along busy commercial corridors, where broken curbs and uneven sidewalks have become a liability concern.
City engineers told the committee that the projects were prioritized based on a pavement condition index survey completed last year. Streets with the lowest scores and highest traffic volumes were pushed to the top of the list. Some of the work is expected to begin as soon as weather allows, likely in late spring. The contracts also include funding for new curb ramps at select intersections to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
The committee did not debate the costs at length, though one member asked whether the city could bundle future projects to attract lower bids. Staff said they would look into that option for the next round of repairs. The full council is scheduled to take up the contract awards at its next regular meeting.
