Nvidia is no longer just selling chips. The company is now using financial engineering to secure its next generation of AI hardware, specifically the upcoming Vera Rubin platform. By offering purchase guarantees and taking equity stakes in major AI labs, Nvidia is creating a locked-in customer base that makes it harder for rivals like AMD or custom ASIC developers to break through.
The strategy is straightforward. Nvidia agrees to buy back or guarantee a certain volume of chips if the lab does not use them, or it takes a direct ownership position in the startup. In exchange, the lab commits to using Nvidia's systems for a set period. This reduces the financial risk for the AI lab, which often faces huge upfront costs for compute, while giving Nvidia a predictable revenue stream and a beachhead for Vera Rubin, its next architecture expected to ship in volume later this year.
But this approach carries hidden risks. If the AI market cools or if these labs fail to generate the expected returns, Nvidia could be left holding equity in struggling companies or forced to honor buyback guarantees for hardware that no one wants. That would hit the balance sheet hard and could undermine the very demand that has driven Nvidia's stock to record highs.
For now, the tactic is working. Several high-profile AI startups have signed on, and Nvidia's data center revenue continues to grow. But the question is whether this is a sign of strength or a sign that Nvidia needs to buy its own future. As ASIC designers like Google and Amazon push their own custom chips, Nvidia's financial muscle may be the only thing keeping those customers from switching. The real test will come when Vera Rubin ships and the guarantees come due.
