Thailand Sees Capital Inflows as Funds Exit Indonesia

Thailand Sees Capital Inflows as Funds Exit Indonesia

Thailand is pulling in foreign capital, partly at the expense of Indonesia, as global investors shift money toward markets they see as having stronger fiscal health and lower risk, according to the country's finance chief. The finance minister noted that Thailand's improving economic fundamentals are making it a more attractive destination compared to some of its regional peers.

The trend highlights a divergence in Southeast Asia. While Indonesia has faced capital outflows in recent months, Thailand has seen a steady stream of inflows. The minister pointed to Thailand's more stable political environment and disciplined budget management as key factors driving the shift. He also cited the country's current account surplus and manageable debt levels as reasons investors are gaining confidence.

This movement of funds comes as global interest rates remain elevated and investors become more selective about where they place their money. Markets with perceived vulnerabilities, such as wider fiscal deficits or political uncertainty, are losing favor. The finance chief emphasized that Thailand's relative stability is a clear advantage in the current environment, though he cautioned that external factors like global monetary policy could still affect the flow of capital. The government plans to maintain its focus on fiscal discipline to sustain this momentum.
