Memorial Day weekend is here, and millions of Americans are hitting the road. But with gas prices climbing again, the cost of that holiday drive is putting a real dent in travel budgets. The national average for regular unleaded has crept up, and diesel prices remain stubbornly high, making it tough for anyone towing a camper or driving a heavy truck.
Still, there are ways to fight back at the pump without skipping the trip. The biggest savings often come from planning ahead. Apps that track local gas prices can show you which stations are charging ten or even twenty cents less per gallon just a few miles away. It is worth the short detour.
Another trick is to lighten your load. Every extra hundred pounds in the car cuts your fuel economy by about one percent. Roof racks and cargo boxes are even worse, creating drag that can slash highway mileage by up to 25 percent. If you are not using it, take it off.
For diesel drivers, the savings can be even bigger. Many truck stops and warehouse clubs offer diesel at a significant discount compared to standard gas stations. Some loyalty programs also give cash back on fuel purchases, which adds up fast on a long haul.
Finally, slow down. Driving 65 miles per hour instead of 75 can improve fuel efficiency by 10 to 15 percent. That might add a few minutes to your trip, but it will keep more cash in your wallet for burgers and souvenirs.
