Campaign finance watchdog sends Luke allegations to prosecutors

HONOLULU -- The state's campaign spending watchdog has referred allegations against Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke to prosecutors for potential criminal investigation. The Campaign Spending Commission voted Thursday to send the case to the Honolulu Department of the Prosecuting Attorney, citing possible violations of Hawaii's campaign finance laws.

The commission's decision follows a review of Luke's campaign finance reports from her 2022 run for lieutenant governor. Commissioners flagged several discrepancies, including unreported expenditures and potential issues with how funds were raised and spent. Specific details of the allegations have not been publicly released, but the commission's executive director stated that the evidence warranted a closer look by law enforcement.

Luke, a former state representative who served as House Finance Committee chair before being elected lieutenant governor, has not commented on the referral. Her office issued a brief statement saying she is cooperating with the process and remains focused on her duties.

This is not the first time the commission has forwarded a case to prosecutors. Similar referrals have led to fines, settlements, or criminal charges against other Hawaii politicians in recent years. The commission has broad authority to investigate campaign finance violations, but it lacks the power to file criminal charges, which is why it relies on prosecutors to take the next step.

The Honolulu Department of the Prosecuting Attorney confirmed receipt of the referral but said it cannot comment on whether an investigation will be opened. The case could take months to resolve, depending on the evidence and legal complexities involved.
